VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava

VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava is a leading Czech and European university offering technical and economic education, producing applied and basic research and ensuring the necessary professional consultancy, consulting and expert services of industry, banking and Business sector, including the offer of lifelong learning.

History

VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava follows the direct continuity of the activities of the lignite school, the Mining Academy and VŠB in Příbram. Lignite School was established in Příbram on 23.1. 1849. The later College of VŠB was from Příbram to Ostrava moved in the year 1945 and the beginning of the fifties began to be broken down into individual faculties. The university is historically connected with the development of mineral extraction and their processing. It is certainly not a exaggeration of the finding that technical skills of Czechs originated and developed mainly in connection with the processing of metals. Our college has traditionally focused on industry and has gradually responded to societal and economic changes in its development.

Since 1989 University of VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava is in custody of structural changes its transformation to modern technical University with a full range of studies. The university continues to rely on its 165 years of long history, but it is strategically supporting the development of prospective technical and economic disciplines.

Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

With its more than 2,600 students, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is one of the largest faculties within the VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava. The real foundations of the Faculty were established in 1970 with the opening of the first independent year of studies in the field of high-voltage electrical engineering. On January 1, 1991 the Faculty of Electrical Engineering was established after the division of the Mechanical and Electro-Engineering Faculty. On September 1, 1993 the name was changed to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

At present, a lot of secondary school students are interested in study branches focused on the latest technology in the areas of informatics, communication technologies, electronics and electrical engineering. The Faculty has become an important factor in restructuring the Ostrava region, which is largely focused on the automotive industry, electrical engineering and information technology. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava puts emphasis on co-operation with industry and takes an active part in searching for contacts within companies offering job vacancies to its graduates both within the Czech Republic and abroad. Several hundred graduates of the Faculty have found jobs in interesting Czech and foreign companies located in the Ostrava Science and Technology Park situated in the immediate vicinity of the Faculty premises. Faculty graduates have one of the highest success rates in the job market.

Co-operation with other academic, commercial and state institutions is relatively wide and it is interconnected with the teaching and specialized work of the teachers and students mainly in master and doctoral degree programs. A large amount of scientific knowledge has been utilized during study stays abroad at European universities. The Faculty closely cooperates with the Moravian-Silesian Region and the Statutory City of Ostrava, in the field of information and communication technologies, and the Faculty is the leader of IT Cluster Association that associates a considerable number of companies and educational institutions. In addition to this, mutually useful cooperation in the areas of electrical engineering, electronics and power engineering is developing with our partners from industry.

The Faculty provides good quality education corresponding to European standards. It accepts the structured model of studies comprising bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in on-site and part-time modes of study. All fields of study are accredited also in the English language. The Faculty systematically creates conditions for integrating disabled students into study. All fields of studies are offered to these students with the possibility of help such as assistance service for lectures, tutorials and movement within the campus as well as an individual approach. The Faculty has wheelchair accessible premises. We already have the first successful graduates among these students.

The Faculty has succeeded in obtaining grants for large and interesting research and development projects. A number of the applied research projects, solving problems in individual electrical engineering and information technology fields of study, is dominated by IT4lnnovations - the Centre of Excellence, regional research Centre ENET and project of development of a new building of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Department of Cybernetics and Biomedical Engineering

The Department has laboratories available that are equipped with modern measuring and control technology, computer technology and program facilities. One of the most advanced worksites is the Laboratory of Programmable Automated Units and Distribution Systems Management, which is equipped predominantly with products by the company Siemens. Currently, not only does instruction take place, students resolve their Bachelor’s and thesis work, and courses are beginning to be arranged for workers in companies and professional seminars for teachers at secondary schools and vocational institutes.

The Department also deals with measurement and control in biomedicine, processing signals in biomedicine, biomedical instrument technology. The Biomedical Laboratory, in cooperation with the hospital facilities and clinical worksites, is engaged in projects focusing on medical device technology, sensors, measurement, processing and visualization of biomedical data. Trends in resolving projects in laboratories are inquiring into modern technologies and designs, directed primarily into applied research of real problems. Some projects - Telemonitoring of life functions, Measuring glycemia of the blind, Reconstruction of 3D image from ultrasonograph, Impact of extremely low temperatures on the functionality of devices and sensors, Processing ultrasonographic data (Reconstruction of 3D image from ultrasonograph), Processing bio-signals with the help of FPGA, Rehabilitation management of drive simulators for traumatology, Software application records of abused children, Measurement of biological signals
